"America is the largest and most powerful economy in the world, and the opportunities are immense," says Matej Zalar, a Slovenian entrepreneur and investor with experience in Silicon Valley.
"Things move faster here than at home, but it's important to understand that success requires physical presence and visibility in the market," he notes.
"Increasing Slovenia's recognition as a developed economy would also benefit our companies, as we still too often face questions about the development and safety of our country. We need centers on both sides that would actively promote investments and assist entrepreneurs in entering the U.S. market."
"The American business environment is open, transparent, and encourages innovation," he said, comparing the U.S. to China and other countries. "The U.S. has a strong legal system that protects intellectual property, which is critical for technology companies. Moreover, there is greater cultural and linguistic compatibility, making communication and business operations easier. Political interference in the economy is also significantly less in the U.S. than in China. The rules of the game are much clearer."
The perception of failure is also crucial. "In the U.S., failure is often seen as part of the journey to success, which encourages entrepreneurs to try again and learn from their mistakes. In Slovenia, however, failure too quickly labels someone as incompetent and suggests they should give up."
